About Me

Joanna Howell: I grew up in Orange, a town located in the central west of NSW. As a child I was constantly drawing and developed my skills as an artist by drawing faces and forms which fascinated me. My interest in the human form lead me to study fashion design. But after completion of a certificate IV, I realised my real love was drawing and making art. I am currently studying Visual Arts at Southbank institute of Technology. I create figurative drawings using different mediums. I am particularly inspired by the female form, utilising elements from real life, and dramatizing them by drawing attention to certain features. I create exaggerated versions of the body with these stylised figures which distort aspects of the ideal human form. I also use elements from fashion in my works, with the use of fabric and the stylised form. I draw inspiration from artists such as Matisse and Brett Whitely.
